The Star Grand or the Treasury Hotel?
Both are sold on The Star's website, both are five-star, and they are a short walk apart. One is new and sits on top of everything in this guide; the other is in a sandstone building from 1901. Here is what the official pages say.
Side by side
| The Star Grand | Treasury Hotel | |
|---|---|---|
| Building | New tower at 33 William Street, opened 29 August 2024 | Land Administration Building, 142 William Street, built 1901 |
| Rooms | 340 rooms in nine categories | The Star's own pages give two different totals, so we print neither |
| Signature feature | Isoletto Pool Club, Sky Deck in the same building | Ceilings of 18 feet, according to the room descriptions |
| Room types listed | City and River rooms, accessible rooms, suites, Skyline suites | Deluxe King, Parlour King, Deluxe Twin, Suite |
| Bathrooms | Modern bathrooms; freestanding baths in the suites | Marble bathrooms; a deep bath in the Deluxe Twin |
| Future | Operating | To be restored and reopened as a heritage hotel, per The Star's FAQ; listed as "coming soon" by the precinct owner |
Choose The Star Grand if
- You want the pool club — it is for The Star Grand's guests.
- You want the Sky Deck, The Terrace and the bridge without crossing a street.
- You need a defined accessible room category; the hotel lists two.
- You plan our weekend as written: every time in it is measured from 33 William Street.
Look at the Treasury Hotel if
- You care more about a historic building than a view from a tower.
- High ceilings and a heritage room matter more to you than a pool.
- You can live with uncertainty: its future depends on the restoration plans described above, so check what is open for your dates.
What we cannot tell you
Prices for the two change daily and we do not publish them. Room counts for the Treasury Hotel differ between pages, and the official pages do not give room sizes there. Our desk handles requests for The Star Grand, which is the subject of this site; for the Treasury Hotel, contact The Star's reservations team directly.
