Responsible gambling and where to get help
This is a hotel guide, and the casino is only one floor of the building. But it is there, it is open around the clock, and if gambling is hurting you or someone close to you, help in Queensland is free and available at any hour.
Call 1800 858 858
Gambling Help Queensland answers on 1800 858 858, free, confidential and 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for anyone affected by gambling — your own or someone else's. An interpreter is available on 131 450. The service is funded by the Queensland Government and offers counselling by phone, in person or online, financial counselling, and services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and for multicultural communities.
Gambling Help Online is the national service that the Queensland site points to for people who prefer to type rather than talk.
The age rule
Only adults 18 and over may enter the casino at The Star Brisbane, and the same applies to the venues inside it — Food Quarter, Fat Noodle, LiveWire and Cherry. Children may not be left unattended while an adult goes into the casino.
Banning yourself from a venue in Queensland
Queensland lets you exclude yourself from gambling venues. According to Gambling Help Queensland:
- At a venue, you can ask to speak to the Customer Liaison Officer or a self-exclusion assistant, who will guide you through it, take or ask for a recent photo, and give you the contact details of a local Gambling Help service.
- You can also exclude yourself remotely, without entering the venue, with the help of a Gambling Help Queensland counsellor, who contacts the venue for you.
- The exclusion takes effect after a 24-hour cooling-off period.
- Exclusions from in-person venues last five years. You can apply to revoke one after at least twelve months.
- If you enter during an exclusion you will be asked to leave, and the incident is reported to the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation, which may issue a fine.
- The venue keeps a register of excluded people, seen only by staff who need it, and must otherwise keep your information confidential.
Tools the operator mentions
The Star Brisbane says Player Activity Statements are available on request from its Guest Service Desk, and it publishes a Safer Gambling Policy. Its terms of entry also refer to people who are excluded, and to facial recognition used to identify them.
