The casino inside the building: what a hotel guest should know
We describe the casino because it sits at the centre of the resort and you will pass it. We do not review it, recommend it or describe any game. If you are not interested, the rest of this site is written for you.
The basic facts
| Where | Main gaming floor on Level 5 of The Star Brisbane, 33 William Street |
|---|---|
| Age | 18 and over only — in the operator's words, guests must be aged 18 years or over to enter the casino |
| Hours | Open 24 hours, seven days, with short closures on three days of the year (below) |
| Operator | The Star Entertainment Brisbane Operations Pty Ltd, named in the footer of the official site |
| Law | Casino Control Act 1982 (Qld); regulator: Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation |
| Help | Gambling Help Queensland, 1800 858 858, free and 24/7 |
The operator's FAQ calls it Brisbane's only casino. It replaced the Treasury Casino at the top of the Queen Street Mall, which closed at midnight on Sunday 25 August 2024 with the regulator's approval; our journal entry covers what happened to that building.
Holiday closures
| Day | Casino hours |
|---|---|
| Good Friday | Closes 3:00 am, reopens at midnight |
| ANZAC Day | Closes 3:00 am, reopens 1:00 pm |
| Christmas Day | Closes 3:00 am, reopens at midnight |
Entry rules that affect hotel guests
The terms of entry are long. These are the parts that matter if you are staying upstairs and only want to cross the building or eat at Fat Noodle or Food Quarter:
- Dress must be neat and tidy. Swimwear is not allowed — come down from the pool in clothes, not in a towel.
- Backpacks, knapsacks and luggage are not allowed. Leave the bags in the room or with the hotel.
- Headwear that hides the face is not allowed, with exemptions for medical conditions and religious headwear. Steel-capped boots and face paint are also on the list.
- Staff may use metal detectors and inspect bags.
- Children may not be left unattended while an adult goes into the casino.
- Guests may not make video or digital recordings inside the casino, including with a phone.
Cameras and facial recognition
The operator states that it uses CCTV, audio recording and facial recognition technology in the casino, among other things to identify people who are excluded, and that by entering you consent to this. It also says images may be shared with other casinos in the same group and with authorities. We mention it because guests often do not expect it; the operator's privacy policy has the details.
What is not on this site
You will not find game names, membership offers, prize promotions or anything that reads like an invitation to gamble. That is deliberate. Our site is about a weekend in a hotel; the casino is one floor of the building and we describe it the way we describe the car park.
If gambling is a problem
Gambling Help Queensland answers on 1800 858 858, free, around the clock, with an interpreter on 131 450. The operator says Player Activity Statements are available on request at its guest service desk. In Queensland you can also ban yourself from a venue; our responsible gambling page explains how that works.
