The night the Treasury Casino closed
People still turn up at the top of the Queen Street Mall looking for a casino. It closed at midnight on Sunday 25 August 2024. Four days later the first stage of Queen's Wharf opened a few minutes' walk away.
What happened, in order
- 22 August 2024. The Star Entertainment Group tells the stock exchange that the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation has approved, under section 61(4) of the Casino Control Act 1982 (Qld), the closure of the Treasury Brisbane Casino to the public.
- Midnight, Sunday 25 August 2024. The Treasury Casino closes. The announcement calls this part of the final preparations for the staged opening of Queen's Wharf.
- Thursday 29 August 2024. The first stage of The Star Brisbane opens, William Street reopens after seven years, and the Neville Bonner Bridge opens to the public.
- Since then. The Star says the Treasury Casino building has passed to Griffith University. The precinct owner's heritage page says it will reopen from 2027 as the university's new CBD campus.
Thirty years in one building
The Star's FAQ puts the opening of Treasury Brisbane in 1995. For almost three decades it was the city's only casino, in a heritage building at the top end of the mall. One of its restaurants made the move to the new resort: Fat Noodle, Luke Nguyen's South-East Asian kitchen, which launched at Treasury more than a decade ago and now sits on Level 5 of The Star Brisbane.
The hotel is a different story
The name Treasury now refers to two separate things, and that is where the confusion starts. The casino building is going to the university. The Treasury Hotel is in another heritage building, the Land Administration Building at 142 William Street, and it kept its own path:
- The Star's FAQ says the Treasury Hotel remains open, alongside The Star Grand, while other hotels in the precinct are built.
- The same FAQ says that once those hotels open, the Land Administration Building will be restored and reopen as a new heritage hotel.
- The precinct owner's site already lists the restored Treasury Hotel as "coming soon".
So, at the time of writing, the operator sells rooms there and the owner describes its future. Both can be true. If you specifically want to stay in the heritage building, ask the hotel directly what is open for your dates.
What it means for your weekend
Nothing complicated: everything in this guide is at 33 William Street, in the new resort. The old casino is not part of it. If you walk up George Street to the mall, you will pass the Treasury buildings — handsome sandstone, worth a look from the outside.
